How to make your home energy friendly

How to make your home energy friendly

Even with minimal changes in your home and in your daily habits, can prove to be extremely beneficial for the environment and your pocket! See how you can make your home energy friendly, easy and economical!

Turning a home into an energy-friendly and reducing energy bills at the same time is proving to be an easier task than we can imagine! Small changes in our daily life and in the care of our home are enough! After all, we owe it to the environment, but also to our pocket!

What can you do today?

Reduce the temperature of your water heater to 60 C. This way, you will not only save energy and money, but you will also avoid temperatures that are not even tolerated by the human body!

Start using energy saving settings in your home appliances: in the fridge, in the dishwasher, in the washing machine and in the dryer. It is indicative that the hot water when washing clothes in the washing machine consumes 90% of the total energy!

Look for opportunities to replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents or LEDs. These bulbs save three quarters of the electricity consumed by incandescent. Prefer 60-100W bulbs for lighting that are used for several hours a day. After all, fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and LEDs fit well with most luminaires.

Check the age and condition of your large appliances, especially the refrigerator! You may want to replace it with a more energy efficient model before it... Dies. In many cases, devices with lower energy consumption are more expensive. But it is certain that they amortize their costs very quickly!

Clean or replace air conditioning filters to increase their efficiency.

Turn off the power when you are not using your electronic devices: the energy they consume in standby mode makes a big difference in the electricity bill!

What can you do in a week?

Buy low-flow showers, and CFL or LED fluorescent lamps.

If you have heat leaks from old windows, insulate them properly! The insulation materials for the frames are very economical and you can find them even in the supermarkets. Do not forget to insulate the bottom of the front door!

Evaluate the home heating and cooling systems and determine if a replacement would be warranted. Or even if with some adjustment they will work more efficiently! The goal is to reduce consumption, not their efficiency!

Invest in a home energy monitor to find out where the largest heat percentage is consumed.

What can you do in a month?

Collect energy, electricity and heating bills and aim to reduce the highest bill

Examine areas such as terraces and basements and look for the type of insulation that has been done. Does maintenance required?

Insulate hot water pipes, especially where they pass through unheated areas.

Seal the biggest air leaks in your home - the ones that whistle on windy days. Usually the worst culprits are not the windows and doors, but the gaps around the luminaires on insulated ceilings and the unfinished spaces behind cabinets and cupboards. Invisible cracks and holes can escape as much heat or cold as if you were leaving a door or window open!

At night and every time you leave your home, adjust your thermostat to save heating energy in winter and cooling energy in summer. It is very likely that you will find the installation of a programmable thermostat particularly convenient.

What can you do in one year?

Insulate! If your walls are not insulated, you can use cellulose flakes or other natural materials!

Replace old, inefficient devices. Even if the device still has a few useful years, replacing it with a high-performance model is a good investment. And it will definitely pay you back.

Replace the frames with energy efficient models.

If you have a garden, reduce the cost of air conditioning by planting trees and shrubs around your home, especially on the west side.
